Captain Chandler Clark founded Sail Destin after many years of operating some of the larger excursion boats here in Destin and longing to provide a more personal setting for visitors to experience Destin by boat. Chandler grew up locally and was cut loose at the age of 12 on a small 20’ sailboat free to sail and explore all the Choctawhatchee Bay had to offer. By 16 he was the first mate on the Silent Lady, a 65’ Gaff Rigged Schooner, and at 19 years old he took command of his first vessel, Blackbeard II. He ran this boat for a year until it was sold and his employer bought a larger, more well equipped boat, the Daniel Webster Clements, a wooden gaff rigged schooner. At 73 feet long, Daniel Webster Clements is the largest sailing vessel to be operated out of Destin. After 2 years on the Clements, and 5 years with the same company, Capt. Chandler resigned his position as captain. In April of 2013 he took command of Southern Star, an 80 foot, double-decker, glass bottom Dolphin cruise boat carrying up to 149 passengers. Southern Star is Destin’s original and premier dolphin cruise/eco-tour. He spent a year as Captain of Southern Star and has extensive knowledge of dolphins and other local marine wildlife that he would love to share with you. Captain Chandler is a USCG licensed 100 ton Master Captain with Auxiliary Sail and Assistance Tow endorsements.
Captain Matt Miller was raised here along the shores of Choctawhatchee Bay. At the age of 10 he got his Boaters License and was entrusted with a 17’ Gulf Line center console and the water became the place to be any day after school or weekends. Matt and Chandler had spent the majority of their lives growing up together and started to sail at about the same time. From smaller monohulls, to several different catamarans and even a few larger boats, if it had sails on it they were about it. While Chandler was the Captain of a large sailing schooner called “Daniel Webster Clements” Matt decided to take a world traveling adventure through the Micronesian Islands spending seven months learning the waters of the areas and learning the cultures of so many different people. Matt returned to the states in 2012 and went straight back into the boating world. In 2013 Matt acquired his 50 Ton USCG Inland Masters License and joined in side by side to help Chandler complete the project of Sail Destin Charters.
